Internet security for your iPhone??

With the iPhone debut less than two weeks away, speculation is running rampant about all sorts of items related to it. An article yesterday in Forbes magazine even goes so far as to question, sight unseen, its security.

The article is not incorrect, in that it's mainly just speculation and innuendo. Its main gist is that the iPhone will probably be somewhat insecure if it's used in a business environment. In other words, it hasn't had the years of tuning that a business device like a Blackberry has. For instance: “iPhones are unlikely to have a remote ‘lock and wipe’ function that erases the device's data in the event that it's lost.” Duh!

Although the business market could certainly be a lucrative one, clearly it's not the one Apple is targeting at first. But the article is likely correct in its suppositions that (1) the phone will find its way into business environments, and (2) the phone probably won't have enterprise-level security when it first ships. So the concerns/speculation are valid, but not really relevant to the "rest of us" who will be using the phone as consumers and small-business people.

No doubt there will be a number of relevant security concerns for us too, but there's no point in trying to guess what they may be. We'll start to find out on June 29.
