Another Apple security ad: cancel or allow?

Yes, Apple has another “Get a Mac” ad focusing on security. It’s hilarious, while bringing up an important issue at the same time. Here’s the whole transcript:

  1. Mac: Hello, I’m a Mac.

  2. “The OS”: Mac has issued a salutation. Cancel or allow?

  3. PC: Allow. And I’m a PC --

  4. “The OS”: Your returning Mac salutation: Cancel or allow?

  5. PC: Allow.

  6. Mac: OK, what gives?

  7. “The OS”: Mac is asking a question. Cancel or allow?

  8. PC: Allow. He’s part of Vista, my new operating system. PCs have a lot of security problems, so he asks me to authorize pretty much anything I do.

  9. “The OS”: Your pointing out Vista’s flaws: Cancel or allow?

  10. PC: Allow. I could turn him off but then he wouldn’t give me any warnings at all and that would defeat the purpose so...

  11. “The OS”: You are coming to a sad realization. Cancel or allow?

  12. PC: Allow.

Just in case you missed it, the nominal (and important) focal point of the commercial is that, if the OS “cries wolf” too often, then (1) it will be awfully annoying, (2) you’ll tend to ignore it, even when there is a “wolf” and (3) you’ll probably turn off that feature entirely. To be honest, even OS X gives too many security warnings (or requests for your password), especially when installing software. Apple wants you to believe, however, that Vista is a whole lot worse, in this area in particular and in Internet security in general.

A point well taken. I wonder what Mr. Gates thinks about the situation.
