Updates, updates, updates

Apple yesterday issued a series of security updates, to Mac OS X (10.4.10 and 10.3.9), the iPhone (available through iTunes) and Safari for Windows. These updates mainly address Safari issues, but also a few other important ones on Mac OS X as well.

The iPhone and Windows updates are solely to Safari, which has been the focus of a number of hackers recently, since it is the principal Internet interface to the iPhone. It's good to see Apple addressing iPhone security issues (which were bound to come up, given the incredible media focus) within a month of the iPhone's shipping.

Many of the fixes in the Mac OS X update also address Safari related issues (which are usually listed under the WebCore or WebKit components). Other important fixes address iChat and Bonjour (listed under mDNSResponder) and Windows Sharing (listed under Samba, and hopefully addressing a previously reported important vulnerability). There are also a surprising number of issues relating to audio (listed under CoreAudio). As with all updates, you may want to wait a day or two before installing this one just to be sure there are no problems with it, but it does seem to include some important fixes, so don't wait too long.
