Security updates for iPhone and Apple TV
Security updates for iPhone and Apple TV
In an interesting comment on the times, Apple last week shipped security updates for both the iPhone and Apple TV. Internet security for your Macintosh is now clearly just one part of a complete Apple security package.
APPLE-SA-2008-07-11 iPhone 2.0 and iPod touch 2.0 is part of Apple’s major new iPhone 2.0 software. It includes a number of security fixes, most of which prevent “malicious Web sites” from causing problems. A couple of the more interesting fixes prevent a remote attacker from resetting the phone and a rogue WiFi access port from “spoofing” Web sites. The update is included with the new 2.0 software, which is the only way to get it (even though you have to pay $10 to get it on your iPod touch).
APPLE-SA-2008-07-10 Apple TV 2.1 contains a number of minor enhancements to Apple TV, including the ability to have iPhone 2.0’s act as excellent remote controls for the device. It includes just a few fixes, all of which are concerned with malicious content (movies and such) that could do bad things to the device. The free update is installed automatically the next time the device checks for updates.
As Apple has branched out, so clearly has the range of devices for which security updates are needed (we haven’t even talked about the Windows security issues Apple has had to address, with Windows versions of QuickTime, Safari and iTunes). So far Apple seems to be doing a good job staying on top of all of their different devices. It will be interesting to see what’s next on the horizon.
