One-year anniversary

Today is the one-year anniversary of Open Door’s DoorStop X Security Suite and associated products, including the electronic second edition of the book for which this blog is named. The Suite, along with standalone versions of the DoorStop X Firewall, Who’s There? Firewall Advisor and “Internet Security for Your Macintosh” were announced and shipped on December 12, 2005. This blog was started soon thereafter.

The products, and the Suite in particular, have proven quite popular as the Mac’s popularity has also increased. As mentioned often here, although the Mac OS is itself intrinsically more secure than Windows, the growing installed base of the Mac, combined with other factors (its use of Intel chips, Apple’s Mac/PC commercials) have made the Mac more of a target for attack than it was at most times in the past. The Mac is still nothing like the target Windows machines represent, but many Mac users have come to realize that they need to take security into their own hands, and have thus looked to our products.

Over the past year, we have made minor free updates to the products, for instance shipping them as universal binaries for Intel machines and making minor bug fixes. At the same time, however, we have been hard at work on major new revisions, with a number of new features asked for by our customers. We don’t want to say too much right now, but hopefully this small glimpse into what’s happening here will provide you, our loyal readers, with something to look forward to from us in the new year. Definitely stay tuned :)
